Airbus Bagged 31 Orders In January: All For A350s

In a solid start to 2024, Airbus has gained orders for 31 widebody A350s and delivered 30 aircraft in January. This year started far more sedately than 2023, which ended with Airbus delivering 112 aircraft in December in the annual sprint to the finish line for 2023.

In January, Airbus received orders for 31 aircraft, delivered 30 and had a backlog of 8,599 aircraft, compared to 37 orders, 20 deliveries and a backlog of 7,255 aircraft at the end of January 2023. In 2023, Airbus delivered 735 commercial airplanes and received orders for 2,319 aircraft (2,094 net), including 1,835 for A320 family and 300 A350 family aircraft and finished the year with unfilled orders for 8,598 jets.

Airbus Commercial Aircraft CEO Christian Scherer said the OEM originally expected aviation to recover in 2023-2025, but the vigorous and earlier-than-expected demand for widebody aircraft, alongside the anticipated demand for single-aisle aircraft, boosted last year’s results.

“A big thumbs up to our commercial and regional teams, and importantly, a big thank you to our customers for their trust and partnership. We have never sold as many A320s or A350s in any given year, not to mention welcoming seven new customers for the A350-1000. Travel is back, and there is serious momentum!”

All the orders in a month are rarely for one aircraft family, but that happened in January with 31 orders for A350 aircraft. Those orders came from just two customers and included a commitment from Delta Air Lines for 20 A350-1000s and Ethiopian Airlines for 11 A350-900 aircraft.

The latest orders have pushed the A350 backlog to 652 aircraft, including 411 A350-900s, 191 A350-1000s and 50 A350F freighters. There are 20 customers lined up for the A350-1000 passenger aircraft, including some well-known airlines such as Qantas, Air India, British Airways, Turkish Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Qatar Airways, Virgin Atlantic, Japan Airlines and Lufthansa.


More new-generation aircraft joining fleets

The picture was slightly different on the deliveries side, with the 30 aircraft split between A220-300s, A320neos, A321neos and A330-900s. ITA Airways and Condor each received one A330-900, while JetBlue and Qantas each received one A220-330.

There were 13 A320neos delivered in January, with three going to both easyJet and IndiGo, followed by a single aircraft each to Air China, China Southern, Air India, SAS, JETSMART Chile, Chengdu Airlines and China Eastern Airlines, some of which were procured via lessors.

There were also 13 A321neos delivered, with three to Wizz Air and two to Delta Air Lines and Spirit. Single aircraft were delivered to Volaris, JetBlue, Air Astana, China Southern Airlines, Chengdu Airlines and United Airlines, again with some aircraft coming via leasing deals.

As is always the case, the backlog of 8,599 is dominated by 7,769 single-aisle aircraft, including 4,910 A321neos, 2,211 A320neos, 44 A319neos and 598 A220s. The A350 backlog is 652, and the Airbus report shows 178 unfilled orders for A330s, although some have an asterisk against them.
