Bristol Airport reveals ‘busiest day’ ahead of 2024 summer holiday bookings

by Staff

Many Brits will have already blocked out their calendars for a summer holiday, with January and February reported to be the most popular time to book in advance. For those flexible on timings, however, a bit of research before pinning down a date might pay off.

The school summer holidays is the obvious period to avoid if you want fewer crowds and potentially a better deal, but Bristol Airport has narrowed it down within that peak season to reveal the busiest time. It has shared a reflection on its operations in 2023 and revealed it was the “busiest year in the airport’s history”, with more plans for growth this year.

Almost 9.8 million passengers passed through the airport in 2023, up more than 10 per cent compared to pre-pandemic levels in 2019. An airport spokesperson said: “Bristol Airport recovered faster from the pandemic than any other major UK airport, seeing huge pent-up demand for holidays and travel to reunite with family and friends.

“Passenger numbers have continued to grow and are now higher than they were before covid hit. In 2023, Bristol Airport cemented its position as the gateway for South West England and South Wales, connecting with more destinations and serving more passengers than all the other airports in these regions combined.”

The spokesperson revealed that “the busiest day was in late August 2023”, when more than 40,000 people travelled through the airport in the space of 24 hours. Though an exact date was not confirmed, last July it predicted that the August Bank Holiday would be the busiest period of summer, forecasting daily figures of 37,000 passengers, which almost matches the statistics shared in retrospect.

This year the August Bank Holiday falls on Monday, August 26, so that weekend from Friday August 23 could be the one to avoid. For any working parents with school age children, though, it could be worth braving the crowds as for most it will mean booking one less day off work.
