With Christmas and New Year’s celebrations now behind us, many will be dreaming about their next summer getaway. Several airlines and holiday websites are running deals for eager sun-seekers in their January sales, including TUI and Booking.com – but you could save even more money on your 2024 break if you book your trip on the right day of the week.
That’s according to Expedia’s 2024 Air Travel Hacks report, which found that Friday is on average the most expensive day to book international flights. It’s common knowledge that one of the best ways to bag a cheap trip overseas is to travel outside of peak times – avoiding the busy school holiday period – but that’s not always possible and is particularly difficult for families holidaying with little ones.
Thankfully, there are other ways to nab a bargain on breaks abroad. According Travel Republic, the best time to book your summer holiday is generally in the first few months of the year – January especially.
The online travel agent’s advice is to book your flights three months before you travel, or six months if you’re jetting off during the peak summer season. It says that January tends to be the cheapest month for bookings. Additionally, if you’re flexible on dates, Travel Republic’s experts say it’s often better to fly mid-week, especially on a Tuesday.
Expedia’s 2024 Air Travel Hacks report also found that booking your summer holiday on a Sunday instead of a Friday can save 24% on the cost of international flights. Overall, the average cost of a plane ticket has dropped by 3% since 2022, the report said.
As for where UK travellers are flying, New York City, Dubai and Bangkok are said to be among the most popular international destinations.
Among the biggest holiday deals available this January, British Airways is offering discounts on flights and holiday packages, including cheaper seats on routes to Europe. BA is selling seven-night holiday packages to the likes of Malta, Algarve and Malaga starting from £249 per person.
Those looking to go further afield can get flights to New York from £356, Orlando from £386 and San Francisco from £415, with deals expected to run until the end of January.
Online travel agent Booking.com is currently running a 15% off sale on selected stays for travel anytime between January and April 1. Meanwhile, easyJet is giving passengers up to 20% off flights in its Big Orange Sale, with discounted fares available to over 130 destinations for travel between January 8 and November 30.
