DRIVE TIME: 2 hours

A RELAXING RETREAT: Strolling the idyllic landscaped trails and watching the rescue horses cavort in the pasture, it’s hard to believe that these 30 acres of land were the site of a fierce battle and a strategic operations center during the Civil War. The original 1809 farmhouse and 1820s barn survived and retain their period charm, making for the perfect retreat after a day of historic immersion in Gettysburg. For the most authentic Civil War-era experience, ask for the Tack Room, with its original stone walls and hand-hewn beams.

FRUITFUL FESTIVITIES: Adams County is apple country. The area celebrates its abundance Oct. 7-8 and 14–15 with the National Apple Harvest Festival in nearby Biglerville. More than 300 arts and crafts vendors will be exhibiting their wares, and chainsaw carvers will be making monolithic masterpieces.

HISTORY ABOUND: There are dozens of battlefield tours of this former Civil War landmark, but the one we recommend is through the National Park Service. Offering both bus and car tours of the nearly 20 square miles of battlefield, the Gettysburg Visitor’s Center gives two-hour guides that are available on a first-come, first-served basis, but you can call ahead at (877) 874-2478 to reserve your tour three days in advance.

FINE DINING: Located in the historic center of town, Dobbin House Tavern offers both casual and upscale dining in a historic setting. The Springhouse Tavern brings guests to a relaxed atmosphere in a stone-walled colonial tavern with sandwich and salad options, as well as steaks, chicken entrees and fish. The Alexander Dining Room take patrons to a more refined era lit by candlelight in the Colonial Manner where crab cakes, onion soups, roast duck and hand-cut steaks are specialties. 89 Steinwehr Ave, Gettysburg; (717) 334-2100
