One Scottish city has been named the greatest weekend break destination in the UK in a new study.

With just one week left of February and spring just around the corner, people across Scotland and beyond will be thinking about where to head for a March staycation. While there is an endless list of scenic rural spots around the country, sometimes nothing beats a city break.

To help you decide where to head, travel experts at hospitality company Village Hotels researched the 10 best UK destinations for a weekend getaway based on a variety of factors. According to the results, Glasgow is the number one city break destination in the nation.

When putting together the top 10 list, the experts considered the following factors: sports tourism, outdoor leisure, food and drink, shopping, and arts and culture. They then assigned each city an overall score out of 10 based on these amenities.

Coming in at number one with a score of 7.07, Glasgow is the only Scottish destination to feature in the top 10. Among the highlights of the city are the sweeping views from atop the historic Glasgow Necropolis and the iconic Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum.

According to the research, there are also 186 hiking trails nearby, so there is plenty of variety even if it is a more picturesque staycation you are after. Meanwhile, the city is also home to 222 five-star restaurants, as well as the Michelin-starred Unalome and Cail Bruich.

Elsewhere on the list, Birmingham follows behind Glasgow in second place with an overall score of 6.2 out of 10 according to Village Hotels. Rounding out the top five are Leeds, Manchester, and Bristol, which have total scores of 5.95, 5.74, and 5.14 respectively.

Commenting on the study, a spokesperson from Village Hotels stated: “The weekend is where most of us let of some steam after the buzz of the working week — so it’s a great opportunity to take a well needed break.
