  • Biman Bangladesh Airlines operates the 10th shortest widebody flight, covering just 120 miles between Dhaka and Sylhet.
  • Virgin Atlantic connects Bridgetown, Barbados, with Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, a distance of just 116 miles.
  • Air Tanzania operates the shortest widebody route, covering 45 miles between Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar.

Many of us may be used to boarding a widebody flight for that long-haul trip abroad, but some airlines deploy their widebody aircraft on some of the shortest routes. Simple Flying decided to look back on 2023 and dug deep into the Cirium files to check on the ten shortest widebody flights for the Year of the Rabbit. The service must operate for at least six months of the year to make the cut for this analysis.

10 Biman Bangladesh Airlines

The flag carrier for the Asian country of Bangladesh strikes tenth place, with its domestic connection between the capital, Dhaka, and Sylhet, the fifth largest city in the county of 169 million. The service between Dhaka Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (DAC) and Sylhet Osmani International Airport (ZYL) is operated by the Boeing 777-300 and 787-8 Dreamliner, covering just 120 miles.

9 British Airways

The oneWorld Alliance member offers a Caribbean connection, servicing St. Lucia to Grenada. Deploying its Boeing 777-200ER between Vieux Fort Hewanorra International Airport (UVF) and Point Salines Maurice Bishop International Airport (GND) all year long, at a distance of 118 miles. 8 Virgin Atlantic Airways

Another British carrier follows suit in the Caribbean, with Richard Branson’s Virgin Atlantic linking Bridgetown, Barbados, with Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. Covering just 116 miles, the Airbus A330-300 serves the route between Bridgetown Grantley Adams International Airport (BGI) and Argyle International Airport (AVD).

7 Shanghai Airlines

Ningbo to Shanghai is next on the list of the shortest widebody flights for 2023. The Skyteam carrier operates from Ningbo Lishe International Airport (NGB) to Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG), serving the 93-mile route with its Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft.

6 Cathay Pacific Airways

A connection from Hong Kong to the China Eastern hub of Guangzhou is next, with Cathay Pacific serving Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport (CAN) from Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) with its Airbus A330-300. The route is just 85 miles in distance.

5 Ethiopian Airlines Group

Ethiopian’s service between Equatorial Guinea and Cameroon features in the top ten shortest widebody flights and also holds the title of the most varied aircraft types. The Star Alliance carrier, which operates to more African destinations than any other, connects Malabo Saint Isabel Airport (SSG) on Bioko Island and Douala International Airport (DLA), the largest city in Cameroon at only 72 miles. The route is served with ET’s Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, 777-200LR, and Airbus A350-900.

Its passenger network has just been joined by the latest destination.

4 Air France

Some French flair connects Freetown Lungi International Airport (FNA) and Conakry Ahmed Sékou Touré International Airport (CKY). At 72 miles, the route is served with the Airbus 330-200 and Boeing 777-200/200ER aircraft. Freetown opened its new terminal this year at five times its previous capacity.

3 Royal Jordanian Airlines

69 miles as the crow flies connects Royal Jordanian’s shortest widebody route between Amman Queen Alia International Airport (AMM) and Tel Aviv Ben Gurion International Airport (TLV) in Israel. The route is operated by the carriers Boeing 787-8 aircraft. RJ has seven Dreamliners in its fleet, with one featuring a unique Petra-themed livery.

2 British Airways

Another Caribbean connection takes second place, with British Airways connecting Saint Kitts Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport (SKB) to V. C. Bird International Airport (ANU) in Antigua. At just 63 miles, the quick hop takes around 19 minutes from gate to gate with the Boeing 777-200ER.

1 Air Tanzania

Taking the crown for the shortest widebody routes in 2023 goes to Air Tanzania’s year-round service between Dar es Salaam and the tropical paradise of Zanzibar. The 787-8 Dreamliner operates the 45-mile hop between Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR) and Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ), shuttling passengers and locals alike to the renowned ‘Spice Islands.’
