Kyoto Bans Tourist Access To Private Alleys In Geisha District

Kyoto’s Gion district, renowned for its geisha (female Japanese performing artists) culture, is taking a stand against post-pandemic overtourism challenges. It imposes visitor restrictions, mainly private alleys, to protect its cultural integrity. This move, prompted by concerns over disruptive behaviour, aims to preserve its unique heritage and address resident discontent.

The residents of the Japanese city, especially those in Gion, have been vocal about their dissatisfaction with the rising tourist numbers. In a heartfelt appeal to the city administration in December, the Gion district council reportedly emphasised that their neighbourhood is not just a tourist attraction but a living community that deserves respect.

Recognising the persistent overtourism issues, the Gion district council is preparing to implement stricter measures. This includes a ban on tourists entering private alleys starting in April.

While Gion’s main thoroughfare, Hanamikoji Street, will remain accessible, the administration stressed the need to curb intrusive conduct. Instances of disrespectful behaviour, such as photography on private roads, have led to the need for more robust enforcement.
