The iconic Edinburgh tourist attraction named among the most DISAPPOINTING in the UK

It is the crown sitting atop the jewel that is Edinburgh – but the famous castle isn’t a hit with everyone. In fact, Edinburgh Castle has now been named in the top 10 most disappointing tourist attractions in the UK.

Families can enjoy an entire day exploring the building, which sits atop Castle Rock at the summit of the Royal Mile. A castle has been on the site for 1,000 years and it has played a huge part in Scottish history, both as a royal residence and military garrison.

Today, it towers over Auld Reekie and plays host to the world-famous tattoo every year. But analysis by language learning platform Preply reveals one in every eight visitors describe Edinburgh Castle as “disappointing”. Preply examined ratings and reviews on Tripadvisor and analysed the language used by visitors rating their experiences of the UK’s biggest attractions either 1, 2, or 3 stars.

And Edinburgh Castle came eighth on the list with almost 13% of reviews being negative. In terms of numbers, Edinburgh was the most disappointing with 6,852 poor reviews, albeit out of 53,021.

TripAdvisor was forced to suspend reviews of Edinburgh Castle recently after Scottish nationalists bombarded it with one-star ratings. It followed a row over the name of the Redcoats Cafe.

Despite the research and the controversy, Edinburgh Castle has a healthy 4.5 star review on TripAdvisor. The most recent review was glowing in its praise, saying: “Beautiful castle. Please ask the guides about extra information. They are so knowledgeable and might even give you extra insights into palace life.”

And another recent five-star review stated: “For the Historians or for those who just have a bucket list of places to visit, this a must and well worth the experience, Would recommend sturdy footwear/ and plenty of steps to negotiate especially to see the Scottish Crown Jewels.”

The Glenfinnan Viaduct in the Highlands also made the ‘top’ 15 with 163 negative reviews out of 1,628 – perhaps those who expected the Hogwarts Express to pay a visit. The Kelpies in Falkirk were 15th overall with 6.42% of reviews not being positive, although that doesn’t seem like a bad ratio! The Tate Modern in London was the most underwhelming in the UK with a whopping 23.21% of reviews being negative.
