A single mum and her son were on a road trip to build a new life when their car was involved in a horror crash which has left them both fighting for their lives.

Maree Lloyd, 49, and son Evan Deverix, 19, were travelling to a relative’s home on Thursday afternoon when they smashed into a tree near Williamstown in South Australia‘s Barossa Valley.

Emergency services were called to Yettie Road just before 5pm and Ms Lloyd was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Her teenager son was airlifted to hospital in a critical condition, where he is in intensive care being treated for life-threatening head injuries.

His side of the car took the brunt of the impact, with the tree smashing into the passenger door in the horror accident.

A GoFundMe has now been set up to help the pair get back on their feet, which has already raised almost $9,000 for the pair.

Bridget Barletta, a family member who organised the fundraiser, said the mother and son were going to need support in the months ahead.

‘Both are currently in hospital and Evan is currently fighting for his life at just 19 years old with significant head injuries,’ she said.

‘These beautiful family members of ours do not deserve the tough times which lie ahead.’

Ms Lloyd had recently found a job and bought a car, but had been unable to find a new rental home in the midst of the property market crisis.

‘They are both trying to get back on their feet following unfortunate personal circumstances,’ added Ms Barletta in the GoFundMe post.

‘Both had temporarily living situations and were looking to rehome at the time.

‘Maree was on her way to a family member’s house where Evan would live temporarily.’

Ms Barletta said the pair will need basic necessities, and to cover the costs of fuel, parking and hospital fees.

‘Both have very tough times ahead, and we hope to ease the financial burden as they look to recover,’ she said.

‘Maree and Evan are well loved by family and friends, and we are hoping that everyone can pitch in to give them the helping hand that they need.’

In an up date, she added: ‘Maree continues to improve in hospital.

‘She is overwhelmed with the love and support and it is good to see her smile. It means the world to her that people are reaching out.

‘Evan is still in the ICU on life support and there are no significant updates. We expect to hear more in the coming days as the Doctors are able to assess him further.’
