A ROAD trip in Greece has been named as one of the best in Europe – and flights are only £20 from the UK.

Even though holidays are typically about the destination, sometimes the journey is even more important.

While Greece is home to plenty of famous landmarks and top attractions, it also has one of the most stunning road trip routes in Europe.

A journey through the winding mountain roads of Zagori, Greece, has previously been dubbed one of the most beautiful in the world by a team of travel experts at Time Out.

They wrote: “These serpentine roads aren’t the easiest, but they are well worth it; think lakes, monasteries, stunning mountain villages and animals that are very much in charge of the place.

“There are several possible routes, so you might as well just get that driving licence sorted and let your whims do the rest.”

As stated by Time Out, there isn’t a set way to go about a road trip through Zagori, which means it can be easily catered to each holidaymaker.

But there are plenty of landmarks any good road trip would tick off, including stopping at sites like the Monastery of Agia Paraskevi, which dangles on the edge of the Vikos Gorge.

There are other points of interest too, including tiny villages like Dilofo, Vitsa, Kapesovo and Tsepelovo.

Other landmarks include the Bridge of Kokkori – a stone bridge sat between two sheer cliffs.

While Ioannina National Airport is the nearest to Zagori, flights only operate to Athens.

For Brit holidaymakers who want to give the snaking road trip a go, the nearest airport, with a direct route to the UK, is Corfu.

From Corfu Airport it’s just over a four hour drive to Zagori – which is almost a road trip in itself.

Ryanair operates direct flights from the UK, with flights starting from £20 for a one-way ticket.

There are also plenty of mountain resorts, hotels and bed and breakfast options in Zagori.

Sun Online Travel have found an overnight stay for £31.50 per person at Hotel Machalas, a three-star hotel.

There are other options too, including boutique hotels with rooms starting from £126 per night.

And Greece has some of the most beautiful islands in the world, many of which are yet to become big with tourists.

Tinos is often overlooked, despite being twice the size of Mykonos, and is predicted to become a popular holiday choice due to its amazing local food and sandy beaches.

There’s no airport, however – you will have to get a 35-minute ferry from Mykonos.

Or you can head to Anafi, which is near (and similar) Santorini but more popular with locals than tourists.

Local website the Greek Reporter wrote: “The view from Chora is much like the view from the Caldera in Santorini.

And the underrated Paros has a wave of new hotels opening, in anticipation of more tourists.

Want to stay somewhere more mainstream? Here’s how to do Mykonos on a budget, according to one woman who has been visiting for 30 years.
