UP NEXT: Utah to Host Oregon Before Road Trip

SALT LAKE CITY –  The University of Utah women’s tennis team returns to the home court to compete against the Oregon Ducks before setting out on another road-match streak.

FIRST SERVE
The match is set to start at 11 a.m. as the Utes prepare to face Oregon for the first time this season. The Utes currently hold a four-match winning streak after their most recent victory against the UC San Diego Tritons. The Utah women also hold an 8-3 record so far this season.

LAST TIME OUT
In their last competition, the Utes faced UC San Diego Tritons at the Northview Tennis Courts in la Jolla, Calif.

After taking control early on by securing he doubles point, the Utah women went on to dominate singles play. With wins from all singles spots, the Utes took the victory with a clean 7-0 sweep.

IN THE RANKS
The Utes are currently ranked No. 47 in the country. Utah’s Marcela Lopez is ranked No. 75 in the country after posting a 6-3 record so far on the season. Lopez moved up eight spots since the last rankings in February, where she placed at No. 83. In the fall she claimed a runner-up title at the ITA Regionals and made an ITA Championship appearance where she picked up two wins in consolation play. 

HEAD COACH RIC MORTERA
Ric Mortera is in his fifth season as the head coach of the Utah women’s tennis program entering the 2024 spring slate. So far in his tenure he has accumulated a 53-44 overall record. In the 2022-23 season, under Coach Mortera’s leadership, the Utes notched a 13-11 record and topped the ITA Mountain Region rankings. Highlights included their inaugural win against Cal and a remarkable triumph over No. 16 Washington, marking their highest-ranked victory in the Pac-12 era. Also, during the 2023 season, Mortera led the Utes to the most Pac-12 wins since 2015. In the Fall 2023 slate, Mortera’s squad found success in the ITA Regionals, with Emma Kamper staking claim to the singles B draw and Marcela Lopez claiming second in the singles main draw, sending her to nationals.

SCOUTING OREGON
The Oregon Ducks currently have an 8-3 record on the season, with their most recent wins from competitions against No. 60 Iowa and Iowa State. The last time the Utes faced the Ducks was during the 2023 season. The match was played in Eugene, Ore. and resulted in a 4-2 loss for the Utes.

NEXT UP
Following Sunday’s home match the Utah women will head on another road trip as they are set to face Washington State on Mar. 15 and Washington on Mar. 17.
